Sleep Studies

The purpose of a sleep study is to diagnose and treat various sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless legs syndrome, to name a few. In addition, sleep studies can help determine the most appropriate treatment for a sleep disorder. For example, a sleep study may show that a patient has sleep apnea and requires continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy to help them breathe better during sleep. Overall, the purpose of sleep studies is to provide an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan to improve a patient’s sleep quality and overall health.

In-Lab Sleep Study

An in-lab sleep study is a medical test to monitor and diagnose sleep disorders. During the study, you will sleep overnight at our sleep center while hook up to special equipment that tracks your breathing, heart rate, brain activity, and other biological markers. The goal is to identify any sleep problems you may be experiencing and develop a treatment plan. It’s a simple and non-invasive procedure that a trained sleep technician will be present for throughout the night to ensure your comfort and safety.
Typically before a sleep study is ordered, you should have a consultation with a sleep specialist or screened by a physician. During your consultation, the physician will review your sleep concerns, symptoms, past medical history, and anything else that may be relevant to or effecting your sleep. Based on this information, the physician will decide if a sleep study is necessary for a diagnosis and/or treatment.
Please arrive to the sleep lab promptly at the time recommended.

At The Sleep Clinic, we strive to provide you with your results as quickly as possible.

In the morning after your study is complete, we will ask you to complete a post-test questionnaire. We will also schedule a follow-up appointment to review your study’s findings and determine the best treatment option to fit your needs.

Home Sleep Study

A home sleep apnea test is a non-invasive diagnostic test used to assess sleep apnea. It involves wearing a portable monitoring equipment at home while you sleep. The equipment measures several key indicators of sleep apnea, including breathing patterns, heart rate, and oxygen levels.

Typically before a home sleep test is ordered, you should have a consultation with a sleep specialist or screened by a physician.

During your consultation, the physician will review your sleep concerns, symptoms, past medical history, and anything else that may be relevant or effecting your sleep. Based on this information, the physician will decide if a sleep study is necessary for diagnosis and/or treatment. Home sleep tests are typically reserved for patients with a high pretest probability for sleep apnea.

At The Sleep Clinic, we strive to provide you with your results as quickly as possible. The sleep doctor will analyze the data and provide the results to you in a timely fashion and determine the best course of action to fit your sleep needs.

It is important to follow the instructions given to you when using the equipment and to make yourself as comfortable as possible while wearing the equipment. This is to ensure that we get an accurate reading.

In the unlikely event that something goes wrong and we are unable to obtain an accurate reading, we may have to pursue an in-lab sleep study.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test

The Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) is a diagnostic test that assesses the sleepiness and drowsiness of a person. The test measure the time it takes for a person to fall asleep during a series of nap opportunities throughout the day. It is typically used to diagnose narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnia.
During your consultation with a sleep doctor, you will be asked a series of questions to assess your level of sleepiness. Your medical history, medications, and any other pertinent information will be reviewed with you. At The Sleep Clinic, we strive to work with our patients to ensure that they are full informed and comfortable with the procedure. All questions and concerns will be addressed.

During an MSLT, the patient is asked to take 4-5 naps at two-hour intervals during the day. Each nap lasts 20 minutes and the patient is monitored for EEG (electroencephalogram) activity to determine when they have fallen asleep. The time it takes to fall asleep during each nap, along with the type of sleep patterns observed, is used to evaluate the degree of sleepiness or drowsiness.

Patients should expect to spend about 5-6 hours in the testing environment for the MSLT. You will be required to do a Polysomnogram the night before the MSLT to determine adequate quantity of sleep and diagnosis of any other sleep disorders.

A variety of factors can affect the results of your MSLT. These include:
